For many years a good friend of mine worked as a Road Marking Operative. I didn't think too much of it at the time and I’m pretty sure he felt the same way.

I recently came across a short video captured by designer Tom Williams. The video follows a pair of workers painting the familiar "bus stop" marking by hand, using only some rough chalk marks to judge the correct size of the letters.

Far from a menial task, there's real artistry required for each sign. Looking closely, you can see the slightest variations between the letters but that only highlights the sheer skill of the hand drawn process.

Tom notes,

'Aside from the captivating way the letters are turned out – for me the 'S' is the highlight, as is the way the signpainter keeps one arm behind his back.'

You have most likely seen the ‘Bus Stop’ sign a thousand times and thought nothing of it. The everyday things that can often appear ordinary become so much more valuable and worthwhile when we understand how they are made.
