City Break October 26 2014, 0 Comments

There’s nothing like a weekend away to recharge the batteries and get a different perspective. Following an impromptu invite from friends we jumped on a flight to Basel, Switzerland for a short break from Friday to Monday.

Having not had much of a chance to do any prior research, I knew little of Basel apart from the Art Fair and stereotypical Swiss associations of cleanliness and space.

We were fortunate enough to receive some beautiful weather, so beautiful that many were taking a dip in the Rheine. A real standout for me was visiting the Vitra Design Museum, designed by California architect Frank Gehry, the museum typically holds 2-3 exhibitions a year and we were lucky enough to catch the Alvar Aalto retrospective.

Alvar Aalto - Second Nature, is an extensive overview of his life and work, including historical architectural models, original drawings, furniture, lights and glassware. The exhibition was complemented by the work of German artist Armin Linke, who has been commissioned to produce new photographs and films of selected buildings.
